Chocolate brownies are a vice I am not ashamed to admit I use whenever I get the opportunity and these slices of chocolate heaven do the trick every time. Chocolate brownie recipes are often guarded and contain all kinds of ย special ingredients that make them each families own. Well this is a simple choclate browniue recipe that really does it for me. Hope you enjoy them.
What you need
180g melted butter
330g sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla essence
100g flour
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
The process
Lightly grease a cake tin (20cm square or a variation similar) and line with grease proof paper.
Cream together the sugar, vanilla essence and eggs with an electric beater.
Add flour, baking powder, cocoa and melted butter and mix well on a medium speed.
Pour the mixture into the cake tin and bake in the oven at 180 Celsius for 25 minutes.
Remove it from the oven and let it cool before turning out of the tin.
I more often than not cover it with a thin layer of this chocolate icing and then sprinkle over a little icing sugar.
You can also fold in pecan nuts before pouring into the tin for something a little extra.
It’s easy, quick and satisfies any chocolate craving!
Here are 2 chocolate icing recipes for you.
Hi Graham, we (a group of expat mommies & there kids) here in the middle east, tried them one afternoon & they were so delish! Thank you!! Question: my batch flopped in on themselves, has that happened to you? They become really gooey & served hot, with cream, almost the entire batch were devoured ๐ had I not Tupperware ‘d some for my Hubby. My other question is, do they store well or is this an “eat on the day it’s baked” type recipe? Again, thanks for your great site! Are you on facebook? I’m so sharing a link to your site with my friends all over even you you don’t have an official f/b page as I love your South African “touch/flavour” Every bit of our SA warmth out there brightens & lightens the world a bit more.
Hi Amanda, so glad you found us and hope you are all safe and well out there. They do sometimes have a dent in the middle and due to your oven temp being a bit low or the liquid being a little too much. They are not meant to be like biscuits but should have a chooey interior. They store very well in a tupperware for a few days or even up to a week, just make sure that the container is closed tightly after opening. You can even pop them in the micro a a minute or so to serve as a dessert with cream or ice cream a few days later. Thanks visiting and I hope you find a few more taste of home recipes that you will all enjoy. Try the tomato bredie for a real SA flavour. Happy days and cheers for now G

Thanks a million for this!!!I’ve been craving brownies for some time now and just could not seem to find the ‘real recipe’. Yours is fabulous and reminds me of those that Hazel (remember that VERY old TV show) used to make).
Lekker Sharon, glad you enjoyed, Hazel? I’m must be a bit young .. Joke.. Go Hazel
Hi Graham, I am a great one for knowing the sizes of tins, dishes etc. So what size cake tin for the brownies and approx how many does it make?
The brownie recipe I make, I leave in the tin and spread over the chocolate icing while stil quite warm ~ can I do this with this one?
Hi Moira, the tin should be around 20cm square or a variation similar, sides should be at least 4cm high. You can add the icing while still warm, no harm done. Enjoy G
Dont want to sound stupid, but I’ve never baked anything in my life before, so with that I’d like to know can one use any type of Flour, or should it be self-raising flour and can I add melted chocolate to my mix before putting into oven?
Hi Janine, you use regular cake flour and should not add chocolate to the mixture. It’s great to add melted chocolate onto the top once it has cooled. You are gonna love them, Cheers G
What a great recipe! Even I made this one perfectly. Thanks for sharing… definitely a huge hit in our home. ๐
So glad your family enjoyed them, brownies are a weekend must me thinks.. G
