Some time back I had a procedure which prompted me to start taking care of my gut and I read and researched all kinds of things regarding gut health and how important it is.

What we eat has changed so much over the years and processed food crammed with sugar is certainly not helping our overall health.

So below is the culmination of my research, distilled into a single shooter every morning on an empty stomach. (closely followed by a coffee and a catch up on the news)

I get my ginger from a Chinese supermarket opposite the primary school in Rivonia. For whatever reason, their ginger is incredible. This is also where I buy my Thai curry pastes and noodles etc.

What you need

A large piece of ginger, at least 20cm long sliced thiny
1 x tablespoon of powdered tureric
1 x teaspoon of black pepper corns
2 x cinnamon sticks
2 x oranges peeled and halved (or about 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice)
2 x lemons peeled and halved
Water to cover (about 1.5 litres of water0

The process

Slice the ginger as thinly as possible using a sharp knife and add to a large pot. You do not need to peel the ginger.

Cut the ends off the lemons and oranges and remove most of the skin, then halve and add to the pot.

Add all of the rest of the ingredients and add enough water to cover the ingredients.

Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, place a lid on the pot and simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour.

Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Strain into a container with a spout (something like a large mixing bowl) and press out any juice in the lemons and oranges.

Decant into a glass bottle and refrigerate.

take a shot of about 50ml every morning 🙂

Hint: restaurants often sell water in glass bottles!
