For this seriously simple slow cooker beef recipe I used silverside but you can use brisket, short rib. It came out beautifully tender and the sauce was delicious. This is a no fuss, 5 minute preparation and then hours in the slow cooker to tenderise and create a fabulous, full of flavour dinner. It just could not be easier. (4 – 6 people)
What you need
1.5kg short ribs or 1 kg brisket or silverside
1 bay leaf and sprig of thyme
1 cup beef stock
6 -8 peeled baby onions
1 punnet green beans
2 medium carrots peeled and roughly chopped
about 12 baby potatoes
The process
Mix together the gravy powder and the salad mix.
Place the beef into the slow cooker with the beef stock and vegetables.
Set your slow cooker to low. Allow to cook for about 7 or 8 hours. No need to look in on it.
Hell could it be any easier… a weekend must do recipe for winter days.
Serve with some roast veggies and you have a winner.
Me again!
I am going to use a piece of salt beef I have in my freezer for this recipe but worry it might be too salty. Any suggestions. People say there is no differnece between salt beef and corned beef yet I remember my mother always pouring off the first lot of water the salt beef had been cooking in!
Hi Moira, corned beef and salt beef a bit salty. Don’t season it, it will be great. I think it would be better in the stew, in which case you should simmer it for 30 mins in water first, drain and then cut into chunks.

HI – eventually tried this out, ditto about the water, but was absolutely divine with plenty of sauce and the ribs literally fell apart. Just a tad salty for us, what can I put in to reduce the saltiness, otherwise a winter winner!
Hi Lesley, the saltiness is from the gravy powder, perhaps try a different brand or put a little less in. Have a great day G
Thanks for this Graham! I am a new mom, and this recipe has saved my butt a few times already. It only takes a few minutes to (literally) chuck everything together, and it comes out great every time. My husband thanks you! 🙂
Any time Nickola, enjoy your little bean… Cheers G
Hi Graham, I Have a piece of salt/corned beef in the freezer ~ would I be able to use it for this recipe??
Moira
Hi Moira, you sure can will be great, corned beef becomes very tender in a slow cooker. Cheers G
Hi Graham,
Just got a 6l for my birthday pressie. This recipe sounds great so will be trying it out on the family this weekend.
I agree with the rest – do let us in on more recipes, SA style!
Hi Kira, sure will, I have been experimenting with a few lately so check back soon. Cheers G
i’m busy making it now, i love my slow cooker, so these recipes are welcome;)
Did it and LOVED it. i wasn’t sure the water was enough, but it was, made the perfect amount of gravy, big ,huge Success… My husband said it was awsome…had it with Jasmine rice and steamed broccoli. yummy
Fantastic Tarryn, winter food at it’s best.. have a great weekend G
I’m off to buy a slow cooker for this weekend. Can anyone recommend a brand. Cost efective but good quality. I’ve never had one and I simply have to try thsi recipe.
Thank you Graham. you made my easter weekend for my family. love you stax.
You are going to love your slow cooker, have a fantastic weekend.
Try get a 6l slow cooker, you should not pay more than about R600, Kenwood are great
Hi Wendy, I looked around a bit and ended up buying a 3.5lt “Mellerware” from Boardmans for +- R349 (3.5lt)which I believe is more practical for 1-4 people as you have to ensure that your porcelain inner bowl is at least 2/3 full. It’s been my best investment to-date but I definitely need more recipes for the slow-cooker (7-8hrs average cooking). Just remember, you need to reduce your liquid to almost half or you’ll end up with a watery soupy stew! The liquid does not evaporate as with conventional cooking methods. Have fun!!! Regards, Bev
Hi Graham – thanks, this looks so yummy and sooo easy. a Definite for the cold winter days
You are welcome, lekker days G
Hi Graham,
Am definitely going to try the slow-cooker ribs this weekend ….yummmmmmy! Do you think you can dig up a couple more “slow-cooker” recipes (sweet and savoury) for the 3.5lt pot?? It’s a great tool, especially for the working class like me – takes me 5 mins to chuck everything into the pot – when I get home 11hrs later it’s cooked to perfection! another point of interest in light of the electricity increase(s)…. the slow cooker uses the same electricity as a light bulb (or so I’m led to believe). Happy cooking! Bev
Hi Bev, there are quite a few more that I need to try and will post as soon as I have. Such an easy way to cook and you are right, uses far less electricity. Enjoy it G
going to try it tonight sounds great.
Enjoy it Rita, Cheers for now G
