I have been traveling for a few days and eating out quite a lot, which inevitably leads to steaks burgers and of course Monkey Gland sauce. here is a great recipe to turn your burger at home into a restaurant experience.
What you need
1 onion finely chopped
1 teaspoon crushed garlic
125ml water
1 tin chopped peeled tomatoes
250ml tomato sauce
125ml Worcestershire sauce
200ml Mrs. Balls hot chutney
6 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
Oil for frying
The process
In a pot over a medium heat with some oil, cook the onions and garlic until soft.
Add all the rest of the ingredients, stir thoroughly to combine and heat through.
Reduce heat tolow and simmer for 30 – 40 minutes.
Serve generous lashings on a beautifully cooked steak or burger.
Hey Graham
I emmigrated from South Africa to Ireland 3 years ago and this week I was suddenly overwhelmed by a craving for Monkey Gland Sauce.
Based on the comments on this blog I decided that your recipe must be a winner. Last night I sat down to a sirloin steak and baked potato smothered in your delicious Monkey Gland sauce. Had to include a bit of the side salad a la Spur / Mikes Kitchen salad bar and a pint of Beamish (similar to Guiness) to keep it a bit Irish.
My son is not old enough to remember Monkey Gland Sauce but after last night’s meal he has asked that it be added to the family recipe book.
Thanks for taking the time to publish it!
Nothing quite like a monkey gland sauce and there are probably as many variations as expats.. If the kids like it we love it! Happy days G
Graham, hoe lank kan ek die sous in die yskas hou?
Hi Andriesha, jy kan dit in die yskas vir 2 weke of so hou, geniet die annd G
Amazing stuff. Add 15ml of Golden syrup and it’s even better. The whole family loves it!
Love the syrup idea Marcelene, happy family… what more could you ask. Have a fantastic day G
Im going to give this a shot tonight
Had some monkeygland sauce at Spur last night and thought to myself “I have to try this at home”. Your list of ingredients sounds spot on to what I also would’ve chosen – going to try this soon!
Fabulous Marisa, there is nothing quite like it, Have a lekker day G
This looks like a great recipe. I think I will try this out with a steak and some red south african wine to top it off.
Enjoy it bud, Monkey Gland sauce is real treat, Cheers for now G
What great memories this recipe brings back. It was de rigeur to order monkey gland sauce when having a night out in the ’70’s. Fondues were also a popular way of entertaining at home and monkey gland was tops of the list of sauces to serve with a fondue Burgouinone.
Those cottages look fabulous, Cheers G
Thanks Graham. I am a frustrated foodie and want to create a food blog but cannot find the time. You can find my blog at http://horizoncot.blogspot.com
Thanks for some interesting and useful recipes.

Hi Dennis, I am trying my best to concentrate before I leave for CT on 2 December… enough of these beautiful beach pics already:) Add a recipe section to your blog, would love to try a few of your favorites. Cheers G
Hi Graham,
Which steak would you recommend I buy and how do I cook it to get a nice tender piece of meat with the monkey gland sauce?
NB: thnx for your excellent pasta recipes
Hi Brenda, my personal preference is an aged rump. If there is a Checkers near you they have steaks called steakhouse classic which is fantastic aged meat. Enjoy it, G
Can I double the ingredients for the monkey gland sauce and store it in a glass jar.
Hi Brenda, sure you can, but don’t keep it for too long unless your jars are sterilized. Cheers for now G
Absolutely THE best Monkey Gland sauce EVER!!!!!!
Hey Lee, so glad you tried it, I havn’t for quite a while, thanks for reminding me.
